Rhode Island pedestrian hit by a car is in critical condition

In today's busy society, it is easy for any Rhode Island driver to become distracted. They reach for the radio, look down to text, get engrossed in a cell phone conversation or even try to enjoy a quick meal. Before they know it, a crash occurs.

An accident between two cars can be bad, but at least all the victims are offered some protection by the vehicles. Victims of pedestrian accidents do not have any protection and these accidents have the potential to be tragic. Many times, victims of these crashes may not even see the incident coming. They are often just walking across an intersection or even on a sidewalk.

Providence man killed in a speeding car accident

Car accidents are all too common in Rhode Island. Negligent drivers get distracted, conditions get bad and accidents happen. Every accident has the potential to be serious. Drivers, passengers and even third parties can suffer very serious injuries, including broken bones, burns and head and neck trauma.

Some accidents are so serious that they can be life-threatening. These car accidents are particularly difficult, especially when the negligence of another causes the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, one Providence family is now facing the aftermath of a fatal motor vehicle accident caused by an allegedly negligent driver.

Rhode Island woman sentenced for causing auto-pedestrian accident

As Rhode Island residents know, car crashes can be devastating to all of those involved. However, pedestrian accidents can be even worse than an accident between two cars. Pedestrian accidents often involve serious injuries. These injuries include broken bones, amputations, lacerations, spinal cord injuries and head injuries. In some cases, auto-pedestrian crashes can even lead to death.

In recent news, a woman was sentenced to one year in jail and four years of house arrest for causing an auto-pedestrian accident in Rhode Island. The accident occurred when a 14-year-old girl and her cousin were walking along a bike path.

Older females cause most wrong pedal accidents

Did you know that accidents in which motorists mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake tend to involve older women drivers in parking lots? A recent study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that nearly two-thirds of drivers that have been in these types of accidents are female. However, when looking at all motor vehicle wrecks, the research found that 60 percent of drivers involved in car accidents are male.

Gas pedal crashes started to gain a bad reputation approximately one decade ago. Rhode Island residents probably remember hearing about the case where an 86-year-old male driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and plowed into a market. Ten people were killed and 63 injured in this incident.

Tax day: It's a dangerous day for road wrecks

Rhode Island drivers are aware that there are some days of the year in which drivers are a bit reckless. Some of these days include St. Patrick's Day or Super Bowl Sunday. Specifically, these are occasions when spirits are high and unfortunately, many inebriated and inattentive motorists find their way onto the roads. However, did you know that the chance of getting into a fatal car accident increases by 6 percent on tax day?

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association focused on the 6,783 people who died in car crashes on tax day over the last three decades. This number was compared to the weeks prior to and after tax day. The research found a national average increase of 13 fatalities on April 15.

April: States crack down on distracted driving

This April, it is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. As many Rhode Island residents know, distracted driving serves as one of the biggest hazards among motorists in the United States. Nevertheless, in a handful of states, it is legal to transmit text messages or talk on the cell phone while driving. This has been a major cause of fatal car accidents.

The Department of Transportation has worked hard to fight against the epidemic. Over the past few years, many states have joined the battle. Some areas have created various educational campaigns about the issue, which are primarily directed at teens.

Research shows that speed limiters can reduce truck accidents

Rhode Island residents know that massive commercial trucks can be extremely risky. These large motor vehicles are especially hazardous on highway roads. While trucks tend to slow down on road inclines, a simple hill will cause them to accelerate downward in speed. This can cause a treacherous truck accident.

According to a study from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there are many safety benefits of using technology to electronically control the speed of commercial trucks.

Car Accidents: Providence is dangerous for drivers

A recent study looked at car crash factors such as speeding, alcohol and seatbelt use. The study also examined the average number of years between driving accidents and tallied state-specific laws on cellphone use while driving.

With this information, researchers sorted which states in the nation have the most dangerous drivers. Unfortunately, Providence, Rhode Island, fared to be one of the most unsafe cities for driving. Out of a list of 100 cities, Providence came in at number 95, and number 100 is considered the most hazardous driving city in the United States.

A new scientific formula can detect distracted driving

We have all heard the consequences of texting and driving. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed across the United States in crashes involving distracted driving. Also, 448,000 were estimated to be injured.

Unfortunately, as many Rhode Island residents know, there are just too many negligent drivers on the road. However, in recent news, a physicist from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is working to scientifically address this problem. With children of his own that are attached to their electronic devices, he decided to take an analytical approach to the problem.

Springing forward: It can lead to car accidents

It was probably a little difficult for Rhode Island residents to roll out of bed this morning. Even with a strong cup of coffee, the Monday after we turn our clocks forward can be very fatiguing.

A source explains that losing an hour on Sunday results in an extra sleepy Monday morning. The time change affects many individuals' productivity. According to an article, daylight saving can cause a car accident, workplace injury or a dip in the stock market.
